India has achieved the third highest growth rate in women researchers globally, according to a report by Elsevier. Despite these strides, gender equality in the research domain remains a distant goal.

According to 'Progress Towards Gender Equality in Research and Innovation - 2024 Review,' India saw a yearly growth rate of two per cent in women researchers over the past decade. With women now constituting 33 per cent of active researchers, India ranks behind only Egypt and The Netherlands.

'India's rapid growth in women researchers underscores significant gender equity efforts,' noted Prof Sandeep Sancheti of Elsevier India. While remarkable progress has been made, challenges persist in reaching full gender parity, which is not expected until 2052, according to the report. The participation of women in patent applications also remains significantly lower compared to men.
