The Israeli military has intensified its offensive against Hamas by ordering evacuations in parts of Gaza City. Neighbourhoods such as Zeitoun and Tel al-Hawa are affected, areas where past operations occurred during the ongoing 17-month conflict.
This escalation follows a cessation of the ceasefire last week, when Israel launched a surprise strike series, resulting in hundreds of Palestinian deaths. These measures aim to exert pressure on Hamas until 59 hostages are returned, with 24 presumed alive, and demands for Hamas to disarm leaders into exile.
Hamas resists, demanding a lasting ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal before considering releasing hostages. The conflict reignited after Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant casualties, including 1,200 mostly civilian deaths on the Israeli side. The retaliation has led to over 50,000 deaths in Gaza, according to the Health Ministry.
