Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024, on Tuesday, highlighting its aim to boost India's disaster response capacity. During a session in the Rajya Sabha, Shah emphasized the bill's potential to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of disaster management efforts nationwide.
Shah explained that the bill assigns significant responsibilities to District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), affirming state government control and safeguarding federal principles. He cited the creation of the National Disaster Response Fund and National Disaster Mitigation Fund as financial aids following the legislative changes.
Further, Shah detailed fiscal commitments made by the Modi government, noting a significant increase in disaster relief funding and efforts like the establishment of a National Disaster Response Reserve. He also informed about strategic procedural enhancements, including the new Urban Disaster Management Authority.
