A rare and complex heart surgery known as the 'Double Switch Operation' was successfully performed on a four-year-old child in Guwahati, according to doctors on Tuesday. This intricate six-hour procedure at a private hospital marks a milestone in pediatric cardiac care for the northeastern region.

The surgery was skillfully led by congenital heart surgeon Dr. Nayem Raja, who operated under the guidance of renowned surgeon Dr. K S Iyer. The team included experienced pediatric cardiologists, anesthesiologists, cardiac intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, and technicians at Healthcity Hospital. The child was diagnosed with Congenitally Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries (CCTGA) with a ventricular septal defect and an atretic pulmonary artery.

Dr. Raja explained that the 'Double Switch Operation' involves an atrial switch, VSD closure, and pulmonary artery reconstruction to restore normal blood circulation and prevent heart failure. The patient, who had presented with symptoms of bluish lips and easy fatigability, has shown remarkable recovery. This successful procedure offers renewed hope for children requiring complex heart surgeries, reducing the need to travel outside the Northeast for such operations.
