Brazil's Supreme Court Set to Decide Bolsonaro's Fate
Brazil's Supreme Court is deliberating whether former President Jair Bolsonaro will face trial on multiple charges, including coup plotting and inciting violence. This follows accusations by Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing, claiming political persecution, while the court assesses evidence for a possible trial.

Brazil's Supreme Court convenes on Tuesday to deliberate the potential trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of multiple serious offenses, including plotting a coup. Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet charged Bolsonaro with attempting to overturn the 2022 election results after a loss to current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The charges involve an alleged conspiracy to assassinate Lula and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, alongside accusations of participating in an armed criminal organization and other severe crimes. If the majority votes in favor, Bolsonaro will face trial, risking decades of imprisonment if convicted.
Bolsonaro, who denies the allegations, argues that the charges are politically motivated. His prospects of mobilizing public support appear to diminish, as seen in recent protests. Regardless, the Supreme Court will scrutinize evidence and vote on whether to pursue a criminal trial against Bolsonaro and several former ministers.
