Turkish Unrest: Imamoglu's Arrest Sparks Nationwide Protests
Protests erupted across Turkey following the arrest of Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, a key political rival to President Erdogan. Charged with corruption, Imamoglu’s detention led to massive street demonstrations, drawing criticism from opposition parties and international communities who allege the charges are politically motivated.

Nationwide protests have gripped Turkey after Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, a significant opponent of President Tayyip Erdogan, was detained on corruption charges. Imamoglu's arrest led to some of the largest demonstrations in over a decade, as his supporters claim the charges are politically driven, a notion the government denies.
Despite a government-imposed ban on public gatherings, crowds continue to voice their dissent, prompting Erdogan to label the protests as violent, accusing the main opposition party CHP of stoking unrest. CHP leaders, however, maintain the charges against Imamoglu lack evidence, calling for his urgent release.
The unrest has dealt a blow to Turkey's financial markets, with the Istanbul stock exchange experiencing severe losses. Analysts warn of extended political instability, while Erdogan attempts to reassure investors of continued economic stability amidst the turmoil.
