The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal is implementing stricter measures against MLAs who have been regularly skipping assembly sessions, according to party leaders. Despite a whip issued to ensure attendance, many lawmakers, including 215 absent on a critical day, have neglected to participate.
The party's Legislative Disciplinary Committee has now summoned several lawmakers to explain their absences. They have been directed to appear in person this week as scrutiny of attendance records intensifies. The committee aims to compile a comprehensive list of habitual absentees for disciplinary action.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay hosted a meeting to review attendance. TMC views repeated absenteeism as irresponsible, and senior leaders emphasize the necessity for accountability. Reports indicate this matter is closely monitored at the highest levels, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's presence during low-attendance sessions.
