The Voice of the People's Party (VPP) achieved a historic victory on Monday by toppling the National People's Party (NPP) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections in Meghalaya. Officials confirmed that VPP's campaign against corruption resonated with voters, allowing them to secure 17 of the 29 available seats.
In the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), VPP emerged as the second-largest party by winning eight seats, trailing only behind NPP's 13-seat win. This significant shift in voter sentiment marks a notable change in the political landscape of the tribal councils.
Election statistics show that more than 70% of JHADC's voters and nearly 60% of KHADC's eligible voters participated in the elections. Despite contesting multiple seats, the BJP and Congress saw limited success, highlighting a new era of leadership ushered in by VPP's vocal leader, Ardent Basaiawmoit.
