In a significant political development, Mahesh Khichi of the Aam Aadmi Party has been elected as Delhi's new mayor. This victory is a boost for the ruling party ahead of critical Assembly polls scheduled for the coming year.
Khichi, a candidate from the Dalit community, narrowly triumphed over the Bharatiya Janata Party's Kishan Lal by securing 133 votes to Lal's 130, with two votes invalidated. The eight Congress councillors abstained from the voting process entirely.
The election process had been delayed from April due to ongoing disputes between AAP and BJP. Meanwhile, the Congress continued to protest, calling for a complete mayoral term rather than the currently proposed shorter term.
