In a significant political move, the Congress party has decided to boycott the upcoming elections for the mayor and deputy mayor positions in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. This decision arises from dissatisfaction with the proposed four-month tenure assigned to the next Dalit mayor.
The party, holding eight seats in the council, announced that while it will attend the MCD House session, it will abstain from the voting process. This move follows after a party member, Shagufta Chaudhary, defected to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), losing Congress some crucial ground.
Congress is pushing for a full term for the Dalit mayor, opposing the current offer of merely four months, which resulted from delayed elections originally set for April amidst AAP and BJP infighting. These elections, reserved for Dalit candidates, are now scheduled to take place at the MCD House.
