The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have thrown allegations at each other over voter intimidation during the Vijaypur by-election in Sheopur district, raising tensions in the region.
Incidents flared when state BJP chief V D Sharma was halted at the district border, while state Congress chief Jitu Patwari was stopped as he entered from Rajasthan, according to sources. Patwari accused the BJP of intimidating voters, claiming ruling party affiliates roamed free while police detained Congress leaders at the border.
Meanwhile, BJP's Sharma alleged Congress workers attacked tribal communities, prompting calls for action by the Election Commission. The vote was necessitated due to political reshuffles, with Ramniwas Rawat's earlier switch to the BJP and Shivraj Singh Chouhan's parliamentary election victory.
