On Wednesday, normal life in Manipur's Imphal Valley came to a standstill as 13 civil rights organizations enforced a total shutdown. This was in response to the alleged abduction of three women and children each, reportedly by militants in the Jiribam district.
The shutdown had a marked impact, closing businesses, educational institutions, and halting transportation across Imphal's five valley districts. The call for the protest was spearheaded by groups like the International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA) and several student and community associations.
No untoward events were recorded in the valley during the shutdown, though violence in other regions persists. With over 200 deaths attributed to ethnic clashes between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since last May, political leaders including state Congress and CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh are urging for immediate governmental intervention to ensure peace and security.
