Amidst stringent security measures, voting for the by-election in Meghalaya's Gambegre assembly constituency began at 7 AM on Wednesday, as reported by an official. Significant numbers of voters have been observed queuing outside polling stations, reflecting the high voter enthusiasm.
Reports indicate that the polling process is gaining momentum across the constituency. 'Enthusiasm is palpable among voters with reports of long queues at several polling stations,' remarked Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari to PTI.
The by-election features Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma's wife, Mehtab Chandee Sangma, representing the NPP, against candidates from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, BJP, and two independents. This election follows Saleng A. Sangma's election to the Lok Sabha, which left the assembly seat vacant.
