WTO Director-General Reappointment in Limbo Amid Trump Concerns
The World Trade Organization plans a meeting to discuss the potential reappointment of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General. Trade sources indicate urgency due to possible opposition from President Trump. Okonjo-Iweala aims to finalize ongoing projects, but WTO's consensus-driven process could face challenges.
The World Trade Organization has scheduled a crucial meeting for later this month, as disclosed by a document on Tuesday. This meeting is set to address the reappointment of its Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
According to trade insiders, the gathering aims to expedite the reappointment process, avoiding potential roadblocks posed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has previously criticized Okonjo-Iweala and the organization. The first day of the meeting, slated for November 28-29, will feature Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian finance minister, outlining her vision for the 166-member body and answering questions from delegates.
Okonjo-Iweala is currently the sole nominee for the position and has expressed her commitment to completing pending initiatives, such as updating rules on fishing subsidies. Although she enjoys widespread support, the lengthy election process might give adversaries, including Trump's team, a chance to oppose her reappointment. Trump's return could herald new challenges for the trade body, raising concerns over its ability to reach a consensus by the November deadline.
