In a last-minute twist before the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-poll, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has accused Congress candidate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of 'exploiting religious sentiments' to sway voters. E J Babu, chief election agent for LDF's Sathyan Mokeri, lodged a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday.
The complaint alleges Priyanka and her supporters have been enlisting religious priests for public prayers to bolster her campaign, actions believed to contravene the Election Code of Conduct and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The LDF has urged the EC for a prompt investigation and cessation of such activities.
As the clock ticks down to the election, the LDF calls for stringent penalties, potentially including disqualification, if the alleged violations are confirmed. With 16 candidates vying for the seat vacated by Rahul Gandhi, the polling begins at 7 am on Wednesday with results to be declared on November 23.
