Mauritius Prime Minister Concedes Defeat
Mauritius's Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth stated that his political alliance, L'Alliance Lepep, faced a major defeat in the recent parliamentary election. Despite his efforts, the population opted for a new team. The election featured 68 parties and five alliances vying for parliament's 62 seats.
Mauritius's incumbent Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, acknowledged his political alliance's significant defeat following Sunday's parliamentary election.
"L'Alliance Lepep is headed for a major defeat. I have done what I can for the country, but the people have chosen a different team. I wish the country good luck," Jugnauth told reporters. The voters turned out in large numbers.
The election aimed to select lawmakers for the 62 parliamentary seats for the next five years from a pool of 68 parties and five political alliances. The winning party or coalition will also secure the prime minister's post.
