Dutch Prime Minister Withdraws from COP29 Amidst Amsterdam Unrest
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof will skip the COP29 climate summit due to social unrest in Amsterdam involving clashes between Israeli soccer fans and pro-Palestinian protesters. As investigations continue, Justice Minister David van Weel vows fast-track justice. Sophie's attendance at the event remains confirmed.
Amid growing tensions in Amsterdam, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced he will not attend the COP29 Climate Summit. The decision comes after violent clashes between Israeli soccer fans and pro-Palestinian protesters led to calls for in-depth investigations into possible antisemitic motives.
Despite Schoof's absence, the Dutch Climate Minister, Sophie Hermans, will attend the climate conference. Violence erupted following a 5-0 defeat of Maccabi Tel Aviv, causing injuries and arrests. Fast-track justice is promised to swiftly address the antisemitic attacks.
Political leaders strongly condemn the violence, asserting that such hate has no place in sports or society. Demonstrations have been banned, with emergency police powers enacted to ensure public safety.
