In a move to capture the electorate's attention ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a controversial promise to introduce an anti-conversion law, a pledge that has sparked both support and criticism. Ujjwal Nikam, a prominent BJP leader and advocate, emphasized the need for such legislation, asserting that forced conversions under duress constitute a significant crime.
This promise is among the 25 key assurances outlined in the BJP's Sankalp Patra, released with much fanfare by party leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, in Mumbai on Sunday. The manifesto also includes financial initiatives like Rs 2,100 monthly aid for women, a loan waiver of up to Rs 15,000 for farmers, and a 20% subsidy on the Minimum Support Price, catering to a cross-section of Maharashtra's electorate.
Meanwhile, the opposition alliance, Maha Vikas Aghadi, countered with its comprehensive manifesto focusing on five core areas: farming and rural development, industry and employment, urban development, environment, and public welfare. The alliance promises a Mahalakshmi scheme providing Rs 3,000 monthly to women, along with other social welfare initiatives designed to appeal to voters seeking holistic development.
