Senior CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA M Y Tarigami voiced strong criticism against the celebration of Jammu and Kashmir's Union Territory foundation day, labeling it a 'humiliation' for the state's people. He contended that the downgrading to a Union Territory status was an unprecedented action and an assault on the country's Constitution.
Tarigami expressed concern over the participation and applause from some bureaucrats in the event, despite opposition from major valley-based political parties. These parties chose to boycott the event, criticizing the LG administration for holding the celebrations.
Addressing Governor Manoj Sinha's remarks on lawmakers' absence, Tarigami reinforced the Supreme Court's declaration of the Union Territory status as temporary and called for the urgent restoration of statehood, echoing sentiments from other political figures and the ruling National Conference, which had previously announced its non-participation.
