At least 10 people were shot dead and another 63 injured by gunfire during post-election protests in Mozambique last week, according to medical associations on Wednesday, as the nation anticipates further demonstrations. Protests erupted before and after the electoral commission announced that ruling party Frelimo had won the Oct. 9 poll, extending its 49-year rule. Opposition candidates, civil society groups, and observers have alleged that the election was rigged.
The electoral commission has so far declined to comment on these allegations, while Frelimo has not responded to requests for comment. The police addressed the protests with teargas and gunfire. Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda informed reporters on Tuesday that the protests were violent, necessitating security forces to act to restore public order, which unfortunately resulted in fatalities.
A joint statement from the Medical Association of Mozambique and the Order of Doctors of Mozambique highlighted that between Oct. 18th and 26th, 73 shooting incidents were recorded, culminating in 10 deaths. They posted their findings on Facebook. Human Rights Watch, which independently confirmed 11 deaths, warned that the true figures could be higher as many instances went unreported to hospitals. The tensions escalated further when an opposition party lawyer and official were shot dead shortly after the election results. The U.S. government and others have called for an investigation into the matter. Presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, who claimed to be the rightful winner, has called for week-long renewed demonstrations starting Thursday.
