Tensions Escalate: Trump's Taiwan Comments Stir China's Warning
China suggested that if Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidency, Taiwan might be sidelined due to 'America First' policies. Trump's comments on Taiwan paying for protection and accusations against Taiwan on semiconductor business have amplified tensions, as the U.S. remains committed to Taiwan's defense. Taiwan continues to view its future independently.
China has hinted that if Donald Trump wins the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Taiwan could be marginalized as a result of the U.S.'s ongoing 'America First' policies. This comes amid Trump's controversial remarks suggesting Taiwan should pay for defense and accusing it of stealing the U.S. semiconductor business.
In response to Trump's stance, the spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, Zhu Fenglian, commented on Taiwan's understanding of U.S. policies, stating that Taiwan is aware it might go from being an ally to being unnecessary. This sentiment captures the tension in U.S.-Taiwan ties, as Trump has promised additional tariffs against China concerning Taiwan.
Despite the turmoil, the U.S. continues arms support for Taiwan, confirming a fresh $2 billion package recently, despite China's objections. Taiwan maintains its stance against China's sovereignty claims, asserting its democratic governance and people's right to decide the future, while hoping for a successful democratic election in the U.S.
