Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday defended himself against allegations outlined in a new book claiming he requested free upgrades for personal flights on Qantas Airways. The book alleges his close rapport with former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.

As the former transport minister, Albanese was accused of developing an inappropriate relationship with Joyce, who led Qantas for 15 years until 2023. Albanese declared 22 free upgrades in a parliamentary gifts register, valued collectively over 300 Australian dollars, though he noted opposition lawmaker Paul Fletcher had declared almost three times that amount.

However, Albanese stressed he acted transparently and appropriately, noting only two conversations with Joyce about non-personal flights. As the allegations draw public scrutiny, Albanese questioned opposition leader Peter Dutton for accepting a free flight from mining magnate Gina Rinehart. Furthermore, Joe Aston, the book's author, highlights the significant federal contracts Qantas held, questioning governmental ties.
