Historic Middle East Accord in Sight: Israel and Saudi Arabia on Path to Normalization
Senator Lindsey Graham believes a historic agreement normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia could be reached this year. Despite challenges, Graham emphasizes the importance of completing the deal under Biden's administration. The normalization could expand the Abraham Accords amid regional tensions and geopolitical complexities.
U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham expressed optimism on Wednesday regarding the potential for a historic normalization agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia by the year's end. Speaking with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Graham emphasized the timely opportunity to finalize the deal while President Joe Biden remains in office.
Graham, in Michigan backing Donald Trump's presidential bid, stressed the importance of the current administration in pushing for the agreement, noting the challenges a future U.S. administration might face. The deal would signify an expansion of the Abraham Accords, which normalized Israel's relations with several Arab nations.
However, the initiative encounters hurdles. Analysts suggest that reaching an agreement would require a commitment to an independent Palestinian state, a contentious issue. Yet, Graham remains confident, eying support from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman amidst ongoing regional tensions.
