Bangladesh Bans Awami League's Student Wing Amidst Rising Protests

Bangladesh's interim government banned the Awami League's student wing, the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), citing its involvement in serious crimes like murder and harassment, and following public demands from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The BCL has been accused of disruptive activities against the State even after the Awami League's fall.

The interim government of Bangladesh has imposed a ban on the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ousted Awami League party, in response to escalating demands from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The decision comes after accusations of the BCL's involvement in actions compromising public safety, including allegations of murder, rape, and harassment, alongside tender manipulation. These activities took place over the 15-year tenure of the Awami League government.

The notification by the Public Security Division stated there was ample proof of the BCL's continued engagement in conspiratorial activities against the State, prompting the interim government to enforce a ban under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, effective immediately.
