Efforts are ramping up in Mumbai's Colaba to boost voter turnout for the Maharashtra assembly elections scheduled for November 20. Authorities are engaging civil society and housing society representatives to tackle the issue of urban apathy that has previously hindered voter participation.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar had voiced concerns over low polling numbers in urban areas, citing the 40 percent turnout in 2019 for Colaba as an example. The Election Commission aims to address this by scheduling the polls on a Wednesday, deterring the electorate from weekend vacations.
Mumbai City Collector Sanjay Yadav revealed that a strategic action plan is being implemented at booth levels to enhance voter engagement. Targeted outreach includes discussions with defense officers, encouraging them to motivate their staff to vote, particularly in Colaba's defense colonies.
