The Andhra Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, has announced the launch of the 'Deepam' scheme. This initiative provides three free cooking gas cylinders annually to eligible women, beginning October 31, positioned as a Diwali gift.
The 'Deepam' scheme is part of the wider 'super six' poll promises made by the TDP chief ahead of the 2024 elections. Other initiatives under this banner include a Rs 1,500 monthly pension for women aged 19 to 59, provision of 20 lakh jobs for youth or Rs 3,000 monthly unemployment aid, and free bus travel for women. Additional plans include Rs 15,000 annually for every school-going child and Rs 20,000 annual financial assistance to every farmer.
Naidu reiterated the government's commitment to women's welfare through the implementation of schemes like 'Deepam' during Diwali. He reviewed the program with Civil Supplies Minister N Manohar and representatives from oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum at the secretariat. Despite the scheme's significant financial implication, with expected costs reaching Rs 2,684 crore annually and Rs 13,423 crore over five years, the government continues to emphasize its dedication to welfare schemes.
