The ongoing controversy over the alleged illegal construction of the Sanjauli Mosque in Shimla has sparked heightened tensions in the region. In response, several organizations organized a march to express solidarity and promote communal harmony amid the unrest. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu revealed that the mosque Imams are in favor of demolishing the structure, citing its illegality.
During an address, CM Sukhu pointed out that members of the mosque's community have openly stated their willingness to remove the illegal structure voluntarily. This includes the Imam, who supports the decision to demolish the controversial segments, recognizing their illegal nature. The demolition work, sanctioned by the Himachal Waqf Board following a court order, will commence with the mosque's roof, according to Sanjauli Mosque case committee Chairman Lucky Mohammad Latif Negi.
Negi explained that the demolition process could extend over five months, hindered by winter conditions and financial constraints. While funds are readily available for mosque construction, contributions for its dismantling have been scarce. Despite securing demolition approval, funding remains unsecured, posing a challenge to timely completion. Although the court granted two months for the process, Negi is seeking an extension due to the obstacles faced.
