The ceremony for administering the oath to Jammu and Kashmir's newly elected assembly members took place on Monday, with pro-tem speaker Mubarak Gul at the helm. Leading the pack was Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who pledged allegiance in the Kashmiri language.
Abdullah, aged 54, faced past criticism for lacking proficiency in his native tongue but has significantly improved since his initial political steps in the 1990s. During his chief minister tenure from 2009 to 2014, he undertook linguistic training, culminating in his recent oath-taking in Kashmiri.
The National Conference emerged victorious in the recent elections, forming a government with Congress support, while the BJP celebrated its best-ever performance in the region, securing 29 seats as the second-largest party.
