Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva canceled his planned trip to Russia for the BRICS summit following medical advice received after suffering a minor brain hemorrhage from a head injury at home.

The presidential office announced that Lula, 78, will now participate in the BRICS meeting via videoconference. Lula's physician, Dr. Roberto Kalil, confirmed that the president is currently recovering well and can perform his regular duties, except for long-distance travel.

Instead, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira will lead Brazil's delegation at the summit. The BRICS diplomatic forum, established 15 years ago, has expanded its membership to include South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
