European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on Moldovans to vote in an October 20 referendum about EU membership. The vote aligns with the presidential election where pro-Western leader Maia Sandu is running. Moldova seeks EU integration amidst accusations of Russian interference.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged the people of Moldova to participate in an upcoming referendum on the nation's potential membership in the European Union. During her visit to Chisinau on Thursday, she announced a massive economic aid package of 1.8 billion euros for the former Soviet state.
The October 20 referendum, which seeks to establish EU membership as a strategic constitutional goal, coincides with a presidential election. Cristina Gherasimov, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, highlighted the economic support's intent to double Moldova's economy within a decade, focusing on railways, infrastructure, and energy efficiency.
