Maldives President Muhammad Muizzu is on his inaugural visit to India, signaling a diplomatic shift as he seeks to improve ties between the two nations. Initially elected on an 'India Out' platform, Muizzu's administration appears to be taking a more collaborative approach.
During his visit from October 6 to 10, President Muizzu met with key Indian leaders, including President Draupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A significant outcome of these talks is India's agreement to bolster the Maldives' defense capabilities.
Despite prior controversies and anti-India rhetoric, the visit reflects a changing tide in Maldives' diplomacy. Former President Mohamed Nasheed and Maldivian Democratic Party President Abdulla Shahid highlighted this progress, underlining the historical and cultural links that bind the two nations together.
