Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao sparked a debate with his statements on Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, asserting that Savarkar, a 'Chitpavan Brahmin', was a meat-eater and didn't oppose cow slaughter. At an event, Rao emphasized Savarkar's modernist views, comparing them with Mahatma Gandhi's vegetarian beliefs and religious faith.

The minister acknowledged claims that Savarkar consumed beef and discussed the ideological contrasts between Gandhi and Savarkar, elucidating how the former's philosophy can counter fundamentalism. Rao distinguished Gandhi's democratic Hinduism from Jinnah's hardened Islamist stance, branding Savarkar as a fundamentalist.

Expounding further, Rao highlighted during a book release dialogue, the stark differences in Gandhi's and Savarkar's beliefs. Rao articulated how such ideological divides, exemplified by Godse's unrepentant ideology, demonstrate the risks of fundamentalism versus Gandhi's peaceful principles.
