In a significant political development, Udhayanidhi Stalin has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The new designation places him third in the state's cabinet hierarchy, following his father, Chief Minister M K Stalin, and senior Water Resources Minister, Duraimurugan.

According to a Government Order dated September 29, 2024, the inter-se seniority of the ministers has been officially redefined. Veteran leader Duraimurugan, known for his long association with the late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, retains the second spot in the ministerial hierarchy.

Prior to his ascent to the Deputy CM position on September 28, Udhayanidhi, was ranked tenth in the council of ministers. The Tamil Nadu cabinet, including the Chief Minister, comprises a total of 35 ministers. This reshuffle marks a significant moment in the political landscape of the state.
