Shiv Sena workers celebrated on Saturday after the accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case was reportedly killed in a police encounter. The celebrations, marked by bursting firecrackers and distributing sweets, were also observed in Thane district, where Badlapur is situated.
Party leaders praised the Maharashtra government and state police for their actions. They also criticized the Opposition for questioning the authenticity of the encounter. Pune city chief Pramod Bhangire stated, "We congratulate the state Government and Maharashtra police. Whatever action the police have taken, it was excellent. Instead of criticizing and casting doubt on the incident, Opposition should support the police and help boost their morale."
The accused, Akshay Shinde, was arrested for sexually assaulting two kindergarten girls. He was killed near Mumbra bypass while allegedly attempting to snatch a police officer's gun. The incident has led to widespread celebrations among Shiv Sena workers, with local leaders in Thane, including MP Naresh Mhaske, offering tributes. Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad handed over a cheque of Rs 51,000 to the police department, stating that even if the encounter was fake, it sends a strong message to those who harass women.
