Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, accused the BJP of spreading falsehoods regarding his recent remarks made during a trip to the United States. Speaking directly to Sikhs in India and abroad, Gandhi questioned whether advocating for a nation where every citizen can freely practice their religion was objectionable.
The former Congress chief asserted that the BJP's desperate attempts to silence him stemmed from their inability to confront the truth. 'As usual, the BJP is resorting to lies. They are desperate to silence me because they cannot stand the truth. But I will always speak up for the values that define India: our unity in diversity, equality, and love,' Gandhi said in a social media post.
His comments followed after the BJP cited a joint statement from several Sikh groups urging him to retract his statement, claiming it had incited fear within the country. BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that the sacrifices of Sikhs had fortified the nation, underscoring their importance. Gandhi's remarks were made while addressing Indian-Americans in Herndon, Virginia, where he emphasized the need for religious freedom for all Indians.
