The opposition Congress in Tripura announced on Friday its intention to gherao the state Director General of Police's office on September 23. The move is aimed at demanding police impartiality, the party stated.

The announcement followed directives from AICC secretary Christopher Tilak, who instructed the action after consultations with senior leaders in the BJP-ruled state. The party alleges that its workers are being unfairly implicated in false cases.

"A crisis-like situation is prevailing in Tripura due to devastating floods. The government has failed to show sensitivity towards the people during these critical times. The police have adopted a biased approach," said state party president Asish Kumar Saha during a press conference.

Saha mentioned that the party has already submitted a deputation to the police and accused them of not functioning according to the law. "Our leaders and workers are being harassed by the police, which is why we have decided to gherao the DGP's office," he added.

Troubled by increasing violence and lack of job opportunities in the state, AICC secretary Tilak also criticized the BJP-led government for ignoring key sectors like Information Technology and failing to protect women.

Tilak claimed that the state government was deceiving people following the devastating floods and announced that party leader Rahul Gandhi would visit the state soon.
