For the first time in years, North Korea has revealed a secret uranium enrichment facility as part of leader Kim Jong Un's drive to ramp up the nation's nuclear arsenal. State media reported Friday that Kim called for efforts to exponentially increase the number of nuclear weapons.
The location of the site remains uncertain, though it may be part of the North's Yongbyon nuclear complex. This disclosure, the first of its kind since 2010, appears designed to put pressure on the U.S. and its allies. Despite the clandestine nature of its facilities, the images released by North Korean media offer critical data for estimating its nuclear production capacity.
South Korea's Unification Ministry strongly condemned the move, stating that North Korea's continued pursuit of illegal nuclear weapons poses a severe threat to global peace. Satellite imagery has previously indicated instability in North Korea's uranium enrichment activities at Yongbyon. Experts, including Ankit Panda from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, emphasize that the situation warrants close monitoring to ascertain the scale of North Korea's nuclear advancements.
