El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele to Visit Argentine Counterpart
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele will visit Buenos Aires in late September to meet Argentine President Javier Milei. Bukele, praised for reducing gang violence but criticized for human rights issues, will discuss various topics with Milei, who has implemented austerity measures to address Argentina's economic crisis.
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele is scheduled to visit Buenos Aires in late September to meet with Argentine President Javier Milei, a government source told Reuters on Thursday. This will be their second meeting this year, following Bukele's abrupt rise to a second-term presidency in June.
Bukele, 42, is known for his aggressive stance on gang violence, significantly reducing murder rates in El Salvador. However, his governance has been marred by accusations of human rights violations. On the other hand, Milei—a libertarian economist and political newcomer who took office in December—has introduced severe austerity measures to tackle Argentina's economic crisis, which has left over half of the population in poverty.
The meeting comes as Milei seeks to expand the military's role in domestic security operations. The agenda for the visit has yet to be disclosed.
