CPI(M) Leader Sitaram Yechury Passes Away at 72 After Prolonged Illness
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury died at AIIMS, Delhi, at the age of 72. He was undergoing treatment for an acute respiratory tract infection and was in critical condition in the ICU. Yechury had a significant political career, serving as a Rajya Sabha MP and CPI(M) Politburo member.

Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of the CPI(M), passed away at the age of 72 at AIIMS in Delhi on Thursday, following a prolonged illness. Hospital and party sources confirmed the news.
In recent days, Yechury had been in a critical condition and was on respiratory support. He succumbed to his illness at 3.05 pm, as per the sources. The veteran leader was being treated for an acute respiratory tract infection in the ICU since August 19.
Yechury's political journey began at the Students' Federation of India in JNU, culminating in his election to the CPI(M) Politburo in 1992. He served as a Rajya Sabha MP for 12 years and became the fifth general secretary of the CPI(M) in 2015. He was also a key figure in the joint opposition's INDIA bloc.
