Veteran CPI(M) Leader Sitaram Yechury Passes Away at AIIMS

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away at AIIMS in Delhi, aged 72. He had been critically ill and on respiratory support due to an acute respiratory tract infection. Yechury was admitted on August 19 for a pneumonia-like infection.

Sitaram Yechury, the CPI(M) general secretary, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Thursday. The 72-year-old had been battling a prolonged illness and was on respiratory support in the ICU.

The veteran leader succumbed to an acute respiratory tract infection at 3:05 pm, as confirmed by hospital and party sources. Yechury had been critically ill for the past few days.

He was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 for treatment of a pneumonia-like chest infection, according to a statement by the CPI(M) earlier this week.
