Germany Implements Temporary Border Controls Amid Migration Concerns

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will announce temporary border controls at all of Germany's land borders to tackle irregular migration and protect the public from Islamist extremism, according to a government source. Faeser is set to detail these measures at a press conference at 1430 GMT.

The new border controls are slated to begin on September 16 and will initially last for six months, as reported by the DPA news agency. The German government has been in discussions with the main opposition CDU party on strategies to curb migration, particularly after a deadly knife attack by a Syrian asylum seeker in Solingen last month.

The anti-immigration AfD party's recent electoral gains in Thuringia and Saxony have added pressure on Faeser's Social Democrats, ahead of a state election in Brandenburg. Germany shares extensive borders with nine countries, and Austria has already stated it will not accept migrants turned away by Germany.
