Xi Jinping and Pedro Sanchez Seek Constructive Solutions to China-EU Trade Tensions
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez discussed improving China-EU ties, emphasizing cooperation in high-tech sectors. Amid potential EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, both leaders aim to avoid a trade war. Xi advocated for constructive roles, while Sanchez sought negotiated solutions through the World Trade Organization.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday urged visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to play a 'constructive role' in improving strained ties between Beijing and the European Union. Sanchez, for his part, expressed hope that the EU could avoid a trade war with China even as Brussels considers imposing tariffs on Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles.
During their meeting, Xi emphasized the importance of deepening commercial ties between China and Spain in sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital economy, new energy, and other high-tech fields. The Chinese leader expressed Beijing's desire to work with Brussels to further develop an independent yet collaborative China-EU relationship, benefiting the global community.
'It is hoped Spain will continue to play a constructive role in this regard,' added Xi. Sanchez responded by stating that Spain wishes to work constructively to bring Spain and EU relations with China closer, richer, and more balanced.
