Pakistan's Information Minister, Atta Tarar, announced on Monday that the decision to conduct a military trial for the imprisoned former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, would be based on the merits of the case. The announcement was made following demands by PTI leaders to release Khan during a public rally in Islamabad.
Tarar's statement came in response to growing calls for Khan's release, who has been detained in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail for over a year. Government officials have hinted at a potential military trial for Khan due to his alleged involvement in the May 9, 2023 violence, during which PTI supporters allegedly attacked military buildings.
The Supreme Court is currently deliberating the legality of holding military trials for civilians. Over a hundred civilians, who were transferred to military authorities after the May violence, are still awaiting trial. PTI leaders have threatened to forcibly release Khan if he is not legally freed within two weeks.
