Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli is poised to make his maiden international journey to the United States, diverging from the typical practice of prioritizing neighboring countries. The purpose of his visit is to join the United Nations General Assembly.

The exact date for his departure remains undisclosed. However, a cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Oli on Thursday approved his travel to the USA, as reported by the state-run Gorkhapatra daily, citing a senior cabinet minister.

The 79th session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled in New York from September 10 to 28. Oli, serving his fourth term since July 15, initially planned to attend the BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand. Due to political unrest in Bangladesh and Thailand, the summit got postponed, leading Oli to cancel his Bangkok trip. 'Prime Minister Oli's visit to New York for the UN General Assembly is confirmed. He will address the Summit of the Future event during the General Assembly on September 22-23,' said Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Sharad Singh Bhandari to Gorkhapatra. Foreign Minister Arzu Deuba Rana will accompany PM Oli.
