NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh Withdraws Support from Trudeau's Government, Election Likely
Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada's opposition New Democratic Party, has withdrawn his party's support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal government. This move heightens the likelihood of an election before October 2025. Singh indicated his party would assess each issue individually to decide if they would support or oppose the Liberals.
Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada's opposition New Democratic Party, has withdrawn his party's support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal government. This decision makes an election more likely before October 2025.
Singh elaborated on his stance after terminating the agreement with Trudeau, stating, "I've ripped up the agreement with Justin Trudeau, and I know that means that an election is now more likely as a result. We are ready to fight an election whenever it happens."
Should all opposition parties unite and back a no-confidence vote, Trudeau's government could fall. However, Singh emphasized that his left-leaning party would evaluate each issue individually to determine their stance. Trudeau's administration could still survive if the NDP abstains during any confidence vote.
