Bangladesh's 'March for Martyrs' Marks Month Since Hasina’s Fall
Thousands of students in Bangladesh commemorated the one-month anniversary of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s fall after deadly protests. Led by students, the anti-government movement escalated from opposing job quotas to a nationwide uprising. An interim government led by Muhammad Yunus is now in place, urging the return of stability and education.
Thousands of students rallied in Bangladesh on Thursday to mark the one-month anniversary of long-serving former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's fall, following deadly protests. The rally, dubbed the 'March for Martyrs,' saw students, teachers, and families of the deceased carrying the national flag and chanting, 'Blood of the martyrs is our power.'
The unrest began in July as a student-led protest against public sector job quotas, rapidly escalating into a nationwide uprising that resulted in more than 1,000 deaths. This violent upheaval forced Hasina to resign and flee to India on August 5, just before protesters stormed her official residence. Violence persisted for days even after her departure.
In her place, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus heads an interim government tasked with restoring stability, implementing reforms, and organizing fresh elections. Yunus has urged students to return to their studies, emphasizing the importance of education for securing the revolution's gains. The new administration has also seen significant changes, including the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and the removal of high-ranking officials involved in the crackdown.
The United Nations Human Rights Office announced a fact-finding mission to investigate alleged human rights violations during this period of deadly unrest, as requested by the interim government.
