Naveen Patnaik, leader of the BJD, announced on Thursday that his party will firmly oppose the Waqf (Amendment) Bill if it is tabled in Parliament.
Speaking at the BJD Minority Cell meeting at 'Sankha Bhawan,' Patnaik underscored Odisha's commitment to harmony and peace, stating, 'The BJD will strongly oppose the bill if it is tabled in Parliament.' The former chief minister noted the bill aims to reform the registration of Waqf properties via a centralised portal and has been referred to a joint parliamentary panel.
'We are proud of our cultural diversity. Everyone's cooperation is essential for a prosperous nation,' Patnaik said. He further noted daily meetings with minority community members who feel insecure, reinforcing the BJD's secular stance and independence from political blocks like NDA or INDIA. BJD Minority Cell Leader Munna Khan echoed these sentiments and committed to protect Odisha's social harmony.
Although the BJD lacks representation in the Lok Sabha, it has eight Rajya Sabha members.
