Thailand to Proceed with Casino Plans After Strong Public Support
The Thai government plans to push forward with introducing casinos, following strong public support. A public hearing indicated 80% approval for a mega entertainment complex that includes a casino. This move aims to boost jobs, state revenue, and tourism, but faces opposition from conservative groups.
Thailand's new government is set to advance with plans to introduce casinos, following public support revealed in a hearing. A senior official announced Thursday that 80% of participants favored creating a major entertainment complex inclusive of gambling facilities.
Despite current laws prohibiting most forms of gambling, the Deputy Finance Minister, Julapun Amornvivat, noted that the bill will be adjusted based on feedback before being presented to the cabinet. Historically, Thailand has seen underground gaming and limited legal gambling, like state horse racing and lotteries.
The initiative, if passed, would place Thailand among regional neighbors with legalized casinos, such as Cambodia and Singapore. Proponents, including former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, argue legalizing casinos would enhance state revenue and formalize the underground economy.
