Texas Attorney General Sues Bexar County Over Unsolicited Voter Registration Forms
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit seeking to block Bexar County from mailing voter registration forms to unregistered residents. Paxton argues the county lacks the legal authority to do so. The county, which favored Biden in the 2020 elections, aims to increase voter participation.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Wednesday initiated legal action against Bexar County in an effort to halt its plan of mailing voter registration forms to unregistered residents, according to court documents.
The lawsuit claims that Bexar County, which is sending unsolicited registration applications to eligible voters, exceeds its statutory authority. This move follows Bexar County's decisive 18-point win for Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2020 elections, while the state overall was won by Republican former President Donald Trump.
As the upcoming Nov. 5 presidential election approaches, Paxton has characterized the registration plan as a potential avenue for registering non-citizens, a claim denied by supporters who argue it's intended to boost voter participation. Senior county officials assert the initiative is non-partisan and aimed solely at increasing voter registrations.
