The United States plans to formally accuse Russia on Wednesday of a campaign to influence the 2024 elections using online platforms to spread disinformation targeting American voters, according to CNN, citing six sources familiar with the matter. Russian state media network RT will be a focal point of the allegations, CNN reported.

This announcement comes just hours before Attorney General Merrick Garland is slated to make public comments at a Justice Department Election Threats Task Force meeting. Garland will be accompanied by FBI Director Chris Wray, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole Argentieri, and Matt Olsen, the Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division.

A spokesman for the Justice Department declined to comment before the election task force meeting. The department has previously warned that Russia poses a continual threat to the November 5 presidential election. Last month, Monaco stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his proxies are employing increasingly sophisticated methods in their interference efforts, targeting specific voter demographics and swing-state voters to manipulate election outcomes.
